Aminah Thompson serves as Durham County’s first Black and first female Clerk of Superior Court, a groundbreaking role she fulfills with compassion, equity, and integrity. With more than 18 years of leadership experience, she is widely recognized for her competence, reliability, and commitment to social justice.


Her distinguished tenure as a Magistrate Judge reflects her ability to navigate complex and sensitive matters with fairness and care. She presided over civil and landlord-tenant cases, officiated marriages, issued search and arrest warrants, and oversaw involuntary commitments and domestic violence protective orders. In addition, she managed administrative traffic court and conditions of release, demonstrating organizational acumen and a steady commitment to equitable outcomes.


Aminah’s leadership is deeply rooted in her values of accountability and service, instilled by her parents and reinforced through decades of public service. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill. Beyond her professional role, she is actively engaged in community life, serving on boards and committees, and participating in Union Baptist Church and the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.


Her focus on equitable access for youth, families, and underserved communities aligns powerfully with Grow House’s mission to cultivate competence, confidence, and contribution. Aminah views her leadership as a responsibility that impacts both lives and legacies, and she approaches this work with deliberation, compassion, and fairness.
