The seed of Grow House was planted decades ago in a small classroom in South Carolina, when a compassionate teacher named Miss Delores Joyner quietly gifted a new pair of shoes to a struggling fourth grader. That simple act of kindness did more than prepare me for a field trip, it restored my confidence, affirmed my worth, and awakened a deep understanding of what imeans to be truly seen. From that moment, a lifelong mission took root: to uplift young people by nurturing their belief in themselves and their ability to lead with purpose.
While on active duty and after 24 years of distinguished service in the United States Navy— leading and serving in Information Warfare, Cybersecurity, Naval Expeditionary, and Naval Special Warfare—I remained committed to serving others. In 2018, I launched Bless the Backs, a grassroots back-to-school supply initiative that, with the support of servant-minded family, friends, and partners, has provided over 1,800 backpacks filled with essential supplies and motivational tools to youth, families in shelters, and individuals experiencing homelessness. I kept returning to one truth: every young person deserves a space to grow, reflect, and prepare for what’s next. This is where the seed to create Grow House was planted—an environment rooted in the belief that growth happens when we look back to learn and look forward to lead.
In March 2023, I partnered with Youth and Families Determined to Succeed (YFDS) to continue doing God’s work. In January 2025, I launched Grow House, a 501(c) 3 non-profit, as the overarching structure for Bless the Backs and all youth development initiatives. Our mission is to foster agrowth-minded environment where youth, families, and individuals build competence, confidence, and a spirit of contribution—equipping them with the tools and resources necessary for personal and professional success.
Through hands-on workshops, mentorship, and real support, we empower and equip youth to embrace who they are, learn from their journey, and step into their future with courage. This isn’t about being perfect; it’s about building a life of purpose and possibility. Just as Miss Joyner once saw me, Grow House now sees and uplifts the next generation of changemakers. Whether you're a supporter, educator, parent, or partner, we invite you to help us grow confidence, competence, and contribution in every young person we serve.
Our Board of Directors does more than govern—they are the strategic heart and servant leaders behind our mission, setting a powerful standard for youth, family, and community transformation. United by vision and anchored in deep core values, this diverse group fuses professional expertise with lived experience, leading with unwavering integrity, compassion, and an absolute commitment to equity.
Our board is relentless in advancing empowerment—holding us accountable to the highest standards of impact and alignment. They don’t just set direction; they champion every young person’s right to thrive, forging innovative partnerships, challenging barriers, and driving continuous improvement and measurable outcomes across every imitative.
